The grinder is a basic necessity for carrying out any business relating to coffee like starting cafe, etc. In order to buy grinders, factors to be taken into consideration are consistency, the range of granularity, a level of noise and temperature level. In order to grind espresso, fineness of grinded coffee is an important factor to be considered.
The size of espresso beans is irregular. The coffee grinder should cut each espresso bean evenly instead of crushing the beans. The taste of the coffee also depends on the temperature of the commercial grinder. As more heat it will generate, the more of the composition and taste of the coffee will be affected.
Various features of Commercial Espresso Grinders
Features of Commercial Espresso Grinders include grinding burr and its shape, types of adjustment of grind, temperature level, types of dosages, etc.
- Grinding Burrs
Grinding Burr is used to grind the coffee beans placed between two revolving surfaces which are at distance set by the user. The distance user sets depends upon how much fine grind of coffee the user wants. The size of grinding burrs generally depends upon the volume available to the user.
These burrs are generally made of any of the three materials, namely, ceramic, steel, and titanium. Burrs made with titanium are considered best due their heat and damage resistance capacity. These burrs also last for longer period of time. Steel burrs are highly demanded burrs due to less cost, but on continuous usage for long hours these burrs catch heat. Ceramic burrs are long lasting and capable of heat resistance, but these burrs can get damaged easily.
- Shape of Grinding Burrs
Generally, there are two shapes of grinding burrs, namely, conical and flat. Among both the shapes, the flat burrs are cheaper and mostly used in commercial espresso grinders. Whereas, conical grinders are made up of steel and has a longer life than flat burrs.
- Grinding Adjustments
In order to maintain the grinded elements of espresso at the same size, grinding adjustments are required to be made. The fluctuations in the grinded elements occur due to change in composition of the coffee and due to environment changes. Thus, to maintain consistency of product, the adjustments of grinding burr is necessary.
The grinding adjustments can be done in 4 ways, namely, Micrometrics Knob, Knob, Stepless Collar, and Stepped Collar. Under micrometrics knob, the lower grinding burr is moved away from the upper grinding burr. It is the easiest type of grind adjustment. The knob is similar to the micrometrics knob, but under this type upper burr is moved away from the lower grinding burr.
In both these cases, adjustment knob is away from the burr. Whereas in Stepless and Stepped Collar are found on the burr. In stepless collar, the upper burr holder moves and come closer to lower other allowing fine grind, whereas in stepped collar the entire burr holder moves and is put in place by a stop pin.
Types of Dosing
Coffee can be put in the dosing chamber in two ways, namely, Manual dosing and Electronic dosing. Under manual dosing, the coffee is placed into dosing chamber and then is manually passed into the filter basket for the future process like brewing. While, under electronic dosing, after putting the coffee into dosing chamber, it will directly pass into the filter basket. Electronic dosing is done on the basis of programming selected by the user.
